MS Word References Tab: From Citations to Tables of Contents (Unlock the Power)

Introduction:

In Microsoft Word Reference Tab has unique value that allows you to insert Table of Contents Table of Figures, Footnote, Endnotes, Captions, and Table of Authorities. Table of Contents:

Using this command user can insert contents of the whole document as the headings with page number. Once you insert it you can update the same contents time to time after editing or adding new contents to the same document.

 

Follow these steps to insert Table of Contents:

Step 1

Ø Type one document with 10 paragraphs.

Ø Mention one Title for each paragraph.

Ø Select the first Title

Ø Go to Home Tab

Ø In Home Tab, Select Heading1 from Styles Command sets.

Ø Repeat the same process for each title

Ø You may choose Heading2, if the title is to place under previous Title as Sub Content.

Step 2

Ø Insert a blank page at the beginning of document

Ø Place the cursor at the top of the page

Ø Go to Reference Tab

Ø Select Table Of Content

Ø Contents of each paragraph will be shown there

Step 3

If you add new paragraph or edit the titles of any paragraph than you should follow

Ø Fix heading style from Styles Command from Home Tab

Ø Then Go to Table Of Contents Page

Ø Select Update (Entire Table)

Ø You can see the changes.

 

Table of Figure:

Using this command user can insert Lists of Figures that you have inserted throughout the document. The list of all figures will be displayed on the first page like Table of Contents.

 

Follow these steps to insert Table of Figures.

Ø Insert images at different locations of the document at least 5 images.

Ø Allot caption to each image from Insert Caption command

Ø Select the level as Figure

Ø Go to the first page

Ø Click to place cursor just below the Table of Contents

Ø Go to Reference Tab

Ø Click on insert table of figure from Caption

Ø Change caption level as Figure

 

Table of Table:

If you want to insert a list of Tables that you have inserted in the document, you should follow these steps.

Ø First insert many tables in your document

Ø Go to insert caption in Reference Tab

Ø Select Table from insert caption level

Ø Allot caption to each table

Ø Go to the first page and place cursor below the table of figure

Ø Go to Reference tab and click on insert table of figure and choose Table from Caption Level

Ø Click on Ok

 

Table of Equations:

You can follow the steps involved to insert table of figures to insert equation of your document.

Ø First insert Equations as you like

Ø Set caption for each equations

Ø Go to first page where you want to insert Table of Equation.

Ø Place the cursor on the contents page

Ø Go to Reference Tab

Ø Click on insert Table of Figure

Ø Choose Equation in caption level

 

Footnotes:

Footnotes are short explanations of words, phrases or sentences located at the end of the same page. Follow the steps to insert footnote.

Ø Select the word, phrase or clause on which footnote will be explained.

Ø Go to Footnote on Reference tab

Ø Click on Insert Footnote

Ø You can see blank space for short explanation with auto numbering at the end of the same page. Fill it as you wish.

 

Endnotes:

Endnotes are short explanations of words, phrases or sentences located at the end of the document. Follow the steps to insert endnote.

Ø Select the word, phrase or clause on which endnote will be explained.

Ø Go to Footnote on Reference tab

Ø Click on Insert Endnote

You can see blank space for short explanation with auto numbering at the end of the document. Fill it as you wish.

 

Cross-reference: Table 1

Using cross reference command user can create relation between headings, tables, figures, equations, footnote, Endnote and other objects on the same document. Follow the steps to create cross-reference.

Ø Place the cursor beside heading or select the heading

Ø Go to Caption Tab

Ø Click on Cross-Reference

Ø Choose what you want in Reference Type

Ø Click on Insert

Ø Ctrl + Click to see the link.
