What is Cyclone?

A cyclone is a large-scale wind spin around a point of low atmospheric pressure area. It rotates clockwise in southern hemisphere while anti-clockwise in northern hemisphere.

Ø The continue movement of hot air upward and cool air towards low pressure area creates cyclone.

Ø The centre of cyclone is called the Eye of the cyclone.

Ø The air mixed with rain around the Eye is called the Wall of cyclone.

 

Cyclones are also known as Hurricane, Typhoon, Tornado, Gale etc. in different parts of the world according to their origin. The state like Odisha of India has a bitter experience of facing cyclone many times since year 1999.

 

Different Cyclones in Odisha since 1999 onward:

Ø Super Cyclone (1999):A super cyclone known as Paradip Super Cyclone hit Odisha coast on 29 October, 1999. The wind speed reached around 270 km/h. The storm surge 6 meters high pushing up to 25 km inland. It killed more than 10000 lives declared officially but around 50000 unofficially. This cyclone damaged life and property worth 2000 billion USD.

Ø Phailin (2013): Made its landfall on the sea shore of Gopalpur, Odisha on 12 October, 2013 by 9 pm. The wind speed was around 140 mph. Shiver rainfall and terrible wind devastated around 250 miles long costal area of Andhra pradesh and Odisha.   

Ø Hudhud (2014): A shiver tropical cyclone hit Andhra Pradesh on 12 October, 2014 by 11 am. The landfall made at Kailashgiri near Vishakhapatnam. The cyclone destroyed valuables mostly at Vishakhapatnam and killed 61 lives. The cyclone left drastic impact on Odisha as well.

Ø Titili (2018): Very shiver cyclone hit on Gajapati district of Odisha. The wind speed was around 165kmph. About 300000 people were evacuated and shifted to safe place.

Ø Fani (2019): A tropical shiver cyclone hit Odisha coast on 2 may, 2019. The wind speed reached up to 251 kmph and damaged heavily. It was the strongest ever cyclone since 1999.

Ø Bulbul (1999): The cyclone made its land fall at Sagar Island of West Bengal on 9 November, 2019. With a wind speed of 135 kmph, it mostly hampered agriculture of Odisha and West Bengal.

Ø Amphan (2020): The pre-monsoon cyclone of this era hit West Bengal and shiverly impacted over Odisha on 20 May, 2020.

Ø BOB (2020): The BOB cyclone left its panic impact on both state Odisha and West Bengal in year 2020. It caused huge destruction over live and public property.

Ø Gulab (2021): Cyclone Gulab crossed the costal of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha 26 September, 2021. It brought rain fall the disturbed normal life of these states.

Ø Arnab (2026): Cyclone Arnab made its land fall on 28 October, 2026 by 8 am in the Yanam coast of Andhra Pradesh. The wind speed was about 150 kmph. The cyclone destroyed common life and property in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Four district of odisha namely Ganjam, Koraput, Gajapati, Nabaranga Pur, Malkanagiri were drastically suffered by heavy rainfall. Especially Ganjam district was submerged by rain water and engulfed by water bodies like dams, rivers and ponds.
