Past Simple Tense

 

Use: (Condition)

1. To express an action completed in past.

(With adverb of time/ Time related word)

2. To express past habit.

 

Example:

1. She left school last year.

2. She always carried an umbrella.

Past Continuous Tense

Use:

1. To express an action that was going on at the time of speaking in past.

2. To express an action that was happening over a period of time in past.

 

Example:

1. I was reading when you rang the doorbell.

2. Last year I was learning mathematics.

Past Perfect Tense

Use: To express complete action

Condition: (If two actions have completed subsequently or one after another, in that case the first action takes past perfect tense while the second action takes past simple tense)

 

Example:

The thief had gone before the police came to the spot.

The train had left before we arrived at the platform.

 

Structure:  Subject- Had-V3-Object
