Introduction:

If you want to learn English language then it is highly essential to know about various kinds of words used in English. Certainly, if you are non-native English people, you must know about The 8 Parts of Speech to have strong grip over English language.   

 
The 8 parts of Speech

Definition:

The words used to form sentence in English are of eight kinds or classes. Those different words are called The 8 Parts of Speech. The words are as follow

1.  Noun

2.  Pronoun

3.  Adjective

4.  Verb

5.  Adverb

6.  Preposition

7.  Conjunction

8.  Interjection  

A word can function as different parts of speech in a given sentence like in ‘I like your laugh’ laugh as noun and in ‘don’t laugh’ laugh as verb.

 

Noun:

A noun is a word used as the name of person, place and things. ‘Things’ includes all objects (Tangible Things) that we can see, hear, taste, touch or smell and something we can think of (Intangible Things) but cannot perceive by the sense organs.

Example:

The rose smells sweet.

His courage won him honour.

 

Note:

Rose is a name of an object; courage and honour are the names of abstract nature are the different types of nouns used in these sentences called nouns.

 

Adjective:

An adjective is a word used to add something to the meaning of a noun. The names of quality, quantity, number, taste, colour etc. are known as adjective.

Example:

He is a brave man.

There are thirty girls in this class.

It is a salty biscuit.

 

Note:

‘Brave’ shows quality of man, ‘thirty’ represents number of girls and salty tells the ‘taste’ of biscuit are the adjectives of these sentence.

 

 

Pronoun:

A pronoun is a word used instead of a noun. It helps to avoid repetition of noun in a paragraph to make the paragraph attractive to read.

Example:

John is absent, because he is ill.

The books are where you left them.

 

Note:

‘He’ has been used for ‘John’ and ‘them’ has been used for ‘the books’ are considered as pronoun in above sentence.

 

Verb:

A verb is a word used to express an action or state. The names of all actions come under verb list as well as the condition means the state of the noun in a given sentence.

Example:

The girl wrote a letter to her mother.

Mumbai is a big city.

Iron and copper are useful metals.

 

Note:

‘Wrote’ is an name of action while ‘is’ and ‘are’ declares the state of place and metals subsequently are known as verb of the given sentences.

 

Adverb:

An adverb is a word used to add something to the meaning of verb, an adjective and another adverb in sentence. These words qualify adjective, adverb and verb of given sentence.

Example:

He worked the sum quickly.

The flower is very beautiful.

She pronounced the word quite correctly.

 

Note:

‘Quickly’ modifies the verb ‘work’,

‘Very’ modifies the adjective ‘beautiful’

‘Quite’ modifies the adverb ‘correctly’. So quickly, very and quite are the adverbs of above sentences.

 

Preposition:

A preposition is a word used with a noun or a pronoun to show relation with other words of the sentence.

Example:

There is a dog in the room.

The boy is fond of sweets.

A fair little girl set under a tree.

 

Note:

‘In’ shows the relation between dog and room,

‘Of’ shows relation between fond and sweets,

‘Under’ shows relationship between set and tree, are prepositions of the sentences.

 

 

Conjunction:

A conjunction is a word used to join words or sentences to make compound word or compound sentence.

Example:

Rakesh and Suman are best friends.

I ran fast, but missed the train.

Either take it or leave it.

 

Note:

‘And’ joins two words; Rakesh and Suman,

‘But’ joins two sentences; I ran fast and I missed the train,

‘Either…Or’ joins two words take and leave are called conjunctions of the sentences given above.

 

Interjection:

An interjection is a word which expresses some sudden feelings and emotions.

Example:

Hurrah! We have won the critical match.

Alas! She is dead.

 

Note:

‘Hurrah and Alas’ in the sentences above changes the state of mind by expressing sudden emotions or feelings that is why they are interjections.

 

Exercise for you:

Name the parts of speech of each word used in the given sentences.

1.  He told us all about the battle.

2.  I will watch while you sleep.

3.  The students of this class have played very well in the match.

4.  The committee were divided in their opinion.

5.  John the goon kills all birds of this area.
